Newtown train station is about 38 minutes away from Machynlleth by train. Google Maps link
It has two platforms:
- Platform 1 is wheelchair-accessible, and only trains heading towards Shrewsbury stop on that platform.
- Platform 2 (towards Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and Pwllheli) is not wheelchair-accessible. Access is via footbridge with many steps, or via Brimmon Lane (see map). Brimmon Lane has a very steep camber on both sides, which would be a major challenge for anyone with a mobility issue, and impossible in a wheelchair. Transport for Wales admit that the camber is not safe for people in wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Brimmon Lane is wide enough for a car to drive along, and cars sometimes drive over the road bridge to drop off/pick up right next to Platform 2. However, passengers would still have to manage a few feet of steep camber between the platform and vehicle.
Newtown station is unmanned. Platform 1 has a roof, and Platform 2 has an open waiting room shelter. There are no toilets.
Transport for Wales say that if a wheelchair-user needs to get a train towards Mach from Platform 2, they should call the TfW Rail helpline and explain the situation, at which point TfW would arrange a taxi from Newtown station to Welshpool or Shrewsbury train station, which are both wheelchair-accessible and in the opposite direction to Machynlleth from Newtown.
The TfW passenger assistance number is 0333 005 0501. It is open Monday to Saturday 8am - 8pm, and on Sunday 11am - 8pm.
